Hillsborough: Interesting Quick Facts

Hillsborough received its Charter on May 29, 1771, and officially became Hillsborough Township. Before that date it was known as the "Westering Precinct of Somerset County".  Hillsborough is a collection of small villages:

- Belle Mead
- Blackwells Mills
- Flagtown
- Neshanic
- South Branch

Hillsborough is the largest municipality in Somerset County, larger in both population and square mileage than Somerville, the county seat.  About 35 miles from Manhattan and only a 10-minute drive from Princeton, makes Hillsborough Twp a centrally located area to live with close proximity to major cities, highways, and hospitals.  In January 2007, "Sleep for Life", the largest sleep disorder treatment program in New Jersey opened in Hillsborough Twp.

Money Magazine has rated Hillsborough as one of the best places in the nation to live in its August, 2007 edition, ranking the Township 23rd in the Top 100. Hillsborough Township coined the phrase, "Hillsborough, The Good Life" about 30 years ago and the Money Magazine announcement demonstrates the true way of living in our town.

After the three and three quarter mile US 206 bypass is completed, the town plans to design a town center along the old Business Route 206. This old section of road will become Main Street and will be zoned for commercial and residential use. Long term plans for a West Trenton Line would allow for Hillsborough to have a train station downtown.
